the cool kids (we are not)

Hey Reader,

Have you ever had a hunch about your business that you couldn't quite shake?

Maybe it's the nagging feeling that your pricing is off on one of your offers. Or that the name you gave your program isn't landing. Or the big one: "Does anyone actually want this?" (Usually they do. But the hunch doesn't care.)

The strange thing about a hunch is that it will nag at you until you do something about it.

So when I recently had a hunch of my own — I wasn't sure people actually understood what The Expert Up Club is — I decided to find out. I asked you to describe the Club back to me in one sentence.

About 20% of you told me “no clue.” (Thank you that was more helpful than you know).

The rest? Everyone had a piece of what the club is.

Most people got that it's about getting clear on their message.

Fewer caught the marketing side. Almost nobody could describe the chain: clear messaging feeds into marketing you'll actually do, which gets you clients who refer you.

(Ok, one person did and then I had to wonder if they were a Club member).

And one person said the Club is "where the cool kids hang out." And to whoever said this, I love you. 🩵

In high school, I was a triple threat weirdo: speech and debate team, theater, AND choir. On the Breakfast Club scale, we are more brains than princesses and athletes.

The Club is where the smart weirdos are. (We wouldn't have it any other way.)

This got me thinking, though: the people who responded are engaged. People who open my emails and take the time to respond. And they still held fragments.

Which got me thinking about your offer.

You talk about it constantly. It feels almost embarrassing to explain it again. In fact, you’re getting bored to death with talking about it.

But the people in your world, even the engaged ones, remember pieces, not the whole thing.

They forgot what was on your sales or services page within 5 minutes of leaving it. (No judgment. You and I forget sales pages too.)

No one is thinking about us as much as we are thinking about ourselves.

So much of marketing, especially if you run a scalable service or leveraged expert business, isn't just selling your offer. It's reminding people what you actually do consistently.

So the question I'll leave you with this Sunday:

How well do people actually understand your offer? Not how well you explain it. What would they say back to you if you asked?

Yours in rebellion,
Michelle

P.S. If your hunch is that your message might be coming back in fragments, the Message Reality Check will show you what your homepage is actually saying. Takes a few minutes, and it's free.
